The Islamic revolutionary court some time ago has sentenced the Ahwazi writer and  journalist Mr. Yousuf Azizi Bani Toruf to 5 years imprisonment.

Three years ago following the events of April 2005, while in Tehran, he was arrested and taken to Ahwaz where he spent more than 64 days in solitary confinement.

He was charged by the court with “acts against national security and provoking the Ahwaz events”.

Mr. Azizi, a researcher on Ahwzi Arabs issues, during the events conducted many interviews with various media concerning the root causes of those events and the Ahwazi Arab people’s civil rights demands, but unfortunately 10 days later he was detained at his home and transferred to Ahwaz.

Azizi Beni Toruf through his writing and having published more than 24 books and hundreds of essays -especially his many translation works for “Hamshahri” newspaper- has helped the inclusion and asserted the presence of everyone in society.  He has always opposed all kinds of secessionist and violent activities, and played an intermediary role in introducing the two rich Arab and Iranian cultures and literature to each other.

We the undersigned while requesting that Mr Azizi Beni Toruf’s sentence be quashed and he declared innocent, we believe that such a sentence is a serious threat to the principles of freedom of expression and civil and democratic rights and will result in stifling the free flow of information.

Surely removing all sorts of misunderstandings and asserting Mr. Azizi’s innocence will create a sense of joy and content among the Khuzistan (Ahwaz) people including the Arabs of this province in this critical juncture.
