Naji Salman Kaabi: Ill-treatment/ Torture/ Danger to his life

To all human rights organizations,
To Amnesty International,
To all who care about human rights,

Reports coming from Ahwaz, Iran, revealed that N S kaabi, an ethnic Arab human rights activist, has been subjected to constant inhumane torture in Ahwaz prisons. This Ahwazi Arab was arrested in June earlier this year. His family hasn’t been allowed to visits him and he’s been moved to different locations.  It is feared his life is in danger and he is suffering from serious health problems due to physical and psychological torture and the harsh conditions he is in.

The Iranian authorities have recently intensified their efforts in persecuting and arresting those engaged in civil and human rights activities, especially in the regions where non Persian ethnic national groups such as kurds, Arabs, Azaris, Baluchis and others live.

N S kaabi is one of those Ahwazi Arabs engaged in such activities within the legal framework of the Iranian constitution, in order to achieve equal national and cultural rights for the indigenous Arab people of Ahwaz. But unfortunately these activists often find themselves in danger of being detained, imprisoned or even executed.

Several online Iranian papers and news websites such as ‘Iran Imrouz’(Iran Today) have reported the story of N S kaabi and highlighted his arrest and torture and  confirmed that his life was in danger.

We remind the Iranian government of its obligations and commitments towards human rights conventions and international agreements which Iran is party to, and also articles stated within the Iranian constitution concerning ethnic minorities and their national and cultural rights.

We call for the immediate release of Naji Salman kaabi and all prisoners of conscience and human rights and civil society activists in Ahwaz region and in other parts of Iran.
